COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- While the debt debate continues in Washington, several people gathered in Colorado Springs Tuesday afternoon for a rally outside Rep. Doug Lamborn's office.
Dozens participated in protest of Rep. Lamborn's support of cutting programs to make up for the nation's debt.
"We're trying to encourage Lamborn to vote with a conscious that provides room at the table for those who are poor," activist Reverend Dr. Nori Rost said, "and for those who are relying on government programs to help them survive."
The rally was organized by members of the local Move On chapter. Activists said the proposed cuts supported by Lamborn will do more damage than good.
"It's going to do dramatic damage to our senior citizens," Chuck Bader, another activist, said. "It's going to cut education programs. It's going to cut job creation. And it is going to hurt social security, medicare and medicaid."
Many senior citizens also took part in the rally in an effort to protect their benefits. However, several said the possible cuts will affect everyone.
"There is not one age group, there is not one ethnicity that is not affected by this bickering and this bipartisanship," activist Sharon Kushner said. "Not one person."
While they understand cuts need to be made, activists hope they also make the decision to raise revenue.
"We need to do that by taxing the rich and corporations," Rost said.
FOX21 contacted Rep. Lamborn's office, but they declined to comment.
