DENVER (AP) -- A permanent Colorado ban on synthetic marijuana sold as Spice or K2 is back before a Senate committee.

The committee put off a vote on the synthetic pot ban last month because of disagreement over what the penalty should be for possessing the drug.

Synthetic pot was recently banned by the federal government, but the federal ban lasts only until next March while officials review the new drug. Senators were moving toward a permanent state ban on the chemicals used to make synthetic pot, but they disagreed over whether the drug should carry the same criminal penalties as cocaine and heroin.

The bill is back before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday.

The committee also planned to debate a bill requiring warning labels on edible pot.
