Brewers pressed Hicklooper on testing rule

DENVER (AP) -- Documents show that Colorado brewers pressed Gov. John Hickenlooper -- a former beer maker -- to change a regulation they feared could hurt small breweries.

The Denver Post reported Monday that they were asking for help even on the night of Hickenlooper's inaugural party.

A Hickenlooper staffer forwarded an email from the brewers to the governor's chief of staff that night.

The newspaper obtained hundreds of documents detailing email exchanges involving the governor's staff, craft brewers and state regulators.

At issue was a new law requiring the state to enforce existing regulations barring restaurants, bars and liquor stores from selling beer with less than 4 percent alcohol.

Hickenlooper ultimately rejected a proposed rule that would have required all brewers to report the alcohol content of their products to help enforce the law.
