YMCA offers lifeguard certification classes

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- If you've ever considered becoming a lifeguard, the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region offers classes and certification in the following:
* Oxygen certification
* CPR-PR/AED certification
* First Aid certification
* Y Lifeguard certification

Prerequisites: You must be at least 16 years of age by the last day of the course, be able to swim front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary breaststroke and be able to swim under water for 15 feet.

Contact your local YMCA for all the details on upcoming courses.

Some of the techniques participants will learn include:
* Actual tube saves for conscious and unconscious victims
* How to protect yourself when going after a victim.
* Moves such as the block, and block and turn, and rear head hold escapes, front head hold escapes.
* Proper guarding technique
* The seriousness of proper guarding, keeping alert, and reacting within 10 seconds.
* How to save a scuba diver
* Escaping from a submerged vehicle
