Pikes Peak obscured by arctic haze

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Are these the coldest temperatures you've ever experienced?
As of Tuesday morning, the cold had just settled into the region. However, we are already in jeopardy of making the record books.
We are in the middle of one of the strongest arctic plunges we have seen in a while. In fact, on Tuesday, the Colorado Springs airport will likely NOT get above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If so, it will be the first time we have seen subzero high temperatures since Jan. 12, 1997.
Pueblo officially stayed above 0 through midnight on Tuesday, then jumped above subzero by late morning.
Overnight lows will potentially be one for the record books as well. The record for Feb. 2 (Wendesday) in Colorado Springs is -16 and -19 for Pueblo. Forecast highs are lower, introducing the first record of 2011.
Wednesday night and Thursday morning could also see lows drop to or below -10 in both cities. For Colorado Springs, this would rank #10 in the longest streak of -10 or lower.
If highs stay below 5 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, this would rank as the 6th coldest weather streak in Colorado Springs recorded history and 3rd coldest in Pueblo.
Of course, all depends on several weather conditions including when winds ease and when the arctic air scours out. Stay tuned to your latest weather forecast for details.
