DENVER (AP) -- Colorado Republicans lawmakers are proposing that people provide proof of citizenship when they register to vote.

The bill will get its first hearing Wednesday in the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.

Sen. Ted Harvey of Highlands Ranch says the state can't allow illegal votes to be cast for either party if elections are going to be fair in Colorado.

Currently voter applicants must provide a document that includes a name and address. That can include a utility bill, bank statement or government check.

The bill would require potential voters to present a U.S. passport, a birth certificate or naturalization papers to register.
