DENVER, COLO. -- Colorado Republicans are vowing not to abandon their principles after taking control of the House after six years of Democratic rule.

On Wednesday, when 100 state lawmakers take their oaths of office, Democrats will control the Senate and Republicans will control the House.

With the controlling party in each chamber able to kill legislation it doesn't like, both parties say they will work to find common ground.

House Speaker-elect Frank McNulty says Colorado families have been tightening their belts for the past four years and it's time for the state to do the same.

McNulty says fighting over social issues would be a waste of time, but adds Republicans will still fight for core values like fiscal responsibility.
