STERLING, COLO. (AP) -- An estimated 20 adult and younger bald eagles are camping out at North Sterling State Park in northeast Colorado.
Park rangers say while eagles occasionally visit the park in the winter, they see this large gathering of the birds as a sign that the reservoir's fishery has improved significantly in the last two years. The Colorado Division of Wildlife has worked with the park to improve the fishery by planting rye grass to feed and shelter young fishing and stocking more fish.
Park officials say the bald eagles are feasting on many types of fish and have been seen between dawn and late morning in their roosts in remote and tall cottonwood trees. The park plans a workshop Jan. 8 on bald eagles and other raptors.
