COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A diabetic man in the middle of an 'episode' led police on a chase down I-25 Tuesday as he weaved in and out of traffic and sped several times.

Colorado Springs police said the 59-year-old man from Colorado Springs was driving southbound on I-25 when he began speeding and nearly hit several cars as he wove through traffic.  He then slowed to 45 mph in a 65 mph zone for a long time.

Traffic backed up along the interstate because drivers did not want to get too close.

A motorcycle officer attempted to pull the driver over near the Unitah exit. The driver acknowledged the officer but did not pull over. Colorado State Patrol picked up the chase near the Academy Boulevard exit.  After the driver didn't pull over, troopers used stop sticks and flattened the driver's tires.

The driver continued, and troopers used tactical vehicle intervention maneuvers to stop the car near mile marker 121, about seven miles south of Fountain.

Officers said patients with diabetes would often drive as if they are drunk if they are in the middle of an episode while driving.

The man was taken to a local hospital because of his medical condition but was not injured.

He is charged with careless driving and eluding, both misdemeanors.
