PUEBLO COUNTY, COLO. -- A Colorado State trooper is in the hospital after being hit by a car while investigating a crash on I-25 Friday morning.
The trooper was investigating a crash near mile marker 108 north of Pueblo around 5:15 a.m. when a series of crashes occured across the interstate. The trooper was out of his car helping the passenger of a car that had hit the guardrail when that car was hit and was pushed into him.
He is in a Pueblo area hospital being treated for moderate injuries.
Both southbound lanes of I-25 north of Pueblo were closed for several hours as crews worked to clean up the pileup, and traffic was re-routed to Purcell Boulevard. Northbound lanes were also closed but have now been reopened. Colorado State Patrol said Overton Road was used as an alternate. Heavy backups are still being reported in the area.
Motorists were advised to find an alternate route if possible.
