DENVER (AP) -- Authorities say a 28-year-old unsolved murder of an elderly Longmont woman has been solved after recent DNA testing.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said Tuesday that a recent DNA test tied John Agrue to the 1982 death of 94-year-old Orma Smith, a former librarian and teacher.

Smith's body was found in a stream about 10 miles south of Estes Park. Agrue, Smith's neighbor at the time of her death, died last year.

Eva Wardlow, Smith's niece, told The Denver Post that Agrue was tied to the slaying after he died in Illinois and a sample of his DNA was sent to Larimer County.

Authorities in Boulder County and Illinois are checking for DNA matches to other women who died in the 1980s.
