DENVER (AP) — The Colorado State Board of Education has rejected a requirement that school districts notify parents when an employee is arrested or charged with certain offenses.
The board voted 4-3 against the rule Wednesday. Board Chairman Bob Schaffer proposed the rule. He says parents have the right to know when school employees are arrested or charged so they can talk to their children.
The rule would have required school districts to notify parents when an employee was arrested or charged with any felony and certain misdemeanors, including unlawful sexual behavior, violations involving children, drunken driving and indecent exposure.
Board member Angelika Schroeder says she would have supported a rule requiring notification in the case of a conviction.
