More than 100 cows perish in Park County

FAIRPLAY, Colo. (AP) -- The Park County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating why more than 100 cows have perished on grazing land outside of Hartsel.

Investigators say dead cows have been found over thousands of acres of land owned and leased out for grazing by the U.S. Forest Service.

Undersheriff Monte Gore says the cows belong to Park County resident Vernon Wagner.

An attorney for Wagner, Jay Wayne Swearingen, denies any wrongdoing. Swearingen told KMGH-TV earlier this month that any charges against Wagner will be "vigorously defended."
