DENVER (AP) -- Judges would be able to order suspected domestic abusers to keep away from family animals under a bill being considered by state lawmakers.

The measure passed its first test Tuesday, winning the unanimous backing of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Democratic Sen. Linda Newell says domestic abusers can harm or threaten to harm pets as well livestock to intimidate their victims. Advocates say some are afraid to leave abusive homes out of fear for the animals they may have to leave behind.

Colorado already allows judges to order alleged abusers to stay away from animals in criminal cases. The bill would allow them to do the same in civil protective orders which can continue on even after a criminal case is done.

At least 12 other states have similar laws.

The proposal is Senate Bill 80.
