Sheriff seeks public's help to find thief of veteran's items

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa asks the public to assist with any information about who stole personal items from a vehicle in the parking lot of Golden Corral Restaurant, 1970 Waynoka Dr., on Tuesday, at approximately 12:45 p.m.

A thief or thieves broke out the left rear window of Tiffany Smith's car as she and her mother-in-law ate before attending the memorial service for her husband, Air Force Sr. Airman Bradley R. Smith, who died fighting in Afghanistan earlier this year.

Video footage is currently being reviewed in an attempt to enhance the picture of the parking area where the theft occurred. Information obtained from the footage at of the suspect vehicle is a dark in color, two-tone, sport utility vehicle; it appears to be a Chevrolet Suburban, with running boards and a luggage rack. 

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for anyone with information about this crime to contact Detective Ralph Losasso at 719-520-7246 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers (719) 634-STOP (7867).

TROY, Ill. (AP) -- Survivors of a southwestern Illinois airman killed in Afghanistan say they're heartbroken because someone stole the serviceman's personal items during a trip to Colorado for a memorial service.

Brad Smith's family says a bag containing the Troy man's dog tags, along with his watch, wallet and other items, was stolen from their rental car while they lunched Tuesday in Colorado Springs.

Smith was killed Jan. 3 by a bomb in Afghanistan. His widow, mother and 3-month-old daughter attending a memorial service at Fort Carson.

The family is pleading to have the items returned, and a $1,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say the widow of an Air Force airman had some of her husband's belongings stolen from her car while she was in Colorado Springs for a memorial service.

El Paso County Sheriff's officials say the belongings included a red Garmin wristwatch with a black band and the dog tags of Bradley R. Smith, an Air Force Senior Airman. Smith died in Afghanistan last month.

Authorities say the thief also took two laptops, a digital camera and a cell phone from Smith's wife after breaking one of her car's windows while was at a Golden Corral restaurant Tuesday. Tiffany Smith was going to attend a memorial service Wednesday for her husband and four Fort Carson soldiers.

Sheriff Terry Maketa says he "will use every available resource" to get the items back.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call 719-520-7246 or Crime Stoppers 719-634-7867 to remain anonymous.
