ESTES PARK, Colo. (AP) -- A fire in Estes Park has seriously damaged a historic building downtown.

Firefighters say the fire at the Park Theatre Mall, a landmark, was reported at 6:19 a.m. on Monday and was contained by noon.

The building dates to 1914 and originally served as a carriage house and livery. It was later turned into a shopping center that was home seven stores but it wasn't equipped with sprinklers or a fire alarm.

Flames were seen shooting through the roof of the building and the fire sent heavy smoke over downtown Estes Park, located at the eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

The town's main street, Elkhorn Avenue, was closed temporarily to accommodate fire trucks and electricity was also temporarily shut off because of safety concerns.
