Over 30 Springs employers looking to hire
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado's unemployment rate is nearly three percent higher than it was this time last year, but if you're unemployed that doesn't mean finding a new job is hopeless.
The jobless rate in Colorado dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 7.4 in April.
It was the first time the jobless rate has gone down since October 2007.
Career coaches tell FOX21 they're now seeing a small spike in employers looking to hire.
Over 30 of those employers were at a career fair put on by DeVry University, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, and the Peterson Airman and Family Readiness Center.
Aboubacar Ballo worked this career fair.
"Right now I'm trying to find a better opportunity for myself and for my family. I'm pretty confident I'm going to get some offers," Ballo said.
This marks Ballo's first serious job search since he completed his active duty with the army three weeks ago.
"I'm looking for an entry level position for networking or IT related positions," Ballo said.
"We have people do not have diplomas, and we have people who have masters degrees. We have employers to match that whole range," Said DeVry University Dean Judy Lesser.
Many of these jobs are coming from a select few industries still growing in Colorado, those include healthcare, education and government.
"Chances are everyone has skills that can transfer into those fields that are growing. So, if you are looking for a job right now take those skills, your education and see how it can transfer into an industry that actually is booming," said Andrea Hoffman, Community Relations Manager for www.jobing.com.
ITT Systems, Booze Allen Hamilton, AFLAC, Human Military, Progressive, Wal-Mart, WOW, and COLSA Corporation were just a few employers at the fair.
You can call DeVry University at (719) 632-3000. They will get you in touch with employers who attended the fair, and direct you to other career services.
