COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Ho Hos, Twinkies, and Ding Dongs they're the snack cake staples that used to fill store shelves.

But news of their parent company Hostess going out of business has snack cake fanatics making a run on the product.

"Buy them in bulk because there are a lot of people wanting to buy them.  Like I remember when there were Twinkies, I want more," Michael Wash, a Colorado Springs resident said.

The need for one more bag of donuts or cream filled treat has Hostess Bakery outlets and local stores running out of  product.

These three shelves are all that's left a local Colorado Springs 7-11 but because they didn't get their hostess delivery Thursday this is the end of the line.

"Normally it would be in stock all the time but today like today with them going out of business it went out pretty quick," Mike Sickels, a Target manager said.

It only took one hour for the snack cakes to disappear from a Super Target on the Northend of Colorado Springs.

And while many are sad to see the American food icon go others are turning Twinkies into spongy gold auctioning the snack on-line for a premium.  But behind every empty shelf lies the real story behind the food run.

"I mean there's people losing their jobs at the holiday time, I think that's where everybody's thought should be instead of oh no we can't get Twinkies anymore," Kim Wellborn, a Colorado Springs resident said.

Hostess, the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, filed a motion with a bankruptcy judge seeking permission to shut down its business.

The company stopped production Friday after warning employees on strike they would shut down if they didn't allow plants to resume normal operations by Thursday night.
