COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- District 11 officials met with parents Tuesday to discuss proposed changes to the school's boundary lines.

Wasson High and Bates and Lincoln Elementary students are being reassigned for next year after the district voted to close their schools earlier this month.

The district is proposing new boundaries to accomodate the closures, but these changes affect the entire district not just the schools closing.

Only 3 parents came for the elementary portion of the meeting, and only around 15 were in attendance at the high school portion.

D-11 officials said the new lines drawn take away pockets of students going to school far from home and better distributes resources.

"We're hoping to get our capacity at the high schools to about 85% at each of the schools just to sort of balance things out a little bit," Devra Ashby, D-11 Spokeswoman said.

Wasson students seeing their reassignments for the first time are worried.

Daisy Vicencio said she's not sure her new school will give the same attention to her, and invest in her success as much as Wasson. That, and of course, friends. "I'm gonna lose a whole bunch of my friends cause we all live all over the place," she said, "we're getting sent to all different schools."

Colorado is a "choice state" meaning students can opt into a different school than the one to which they are assigned, as long as that school hasn't reached capacity. Wasson, Lincoln and Bates kids get to pick first leaving other parents in the district wondering.

"They've had a lot of turmoil so that's certainly understandable they get first priority but then are there gonna be choice spots left for all these other people affected?," Brian Worby, a D-11 parent explained.

Brian's son had his heart set on Coronoado, where his sister is a junior. But his son has been reassigned to Dougherty.

He said is upset he's expected to have two highschoolers in two different high schools, and that even though his son could potentially be grandfathered into the school as well, he's been told his son wouldn't be offered transportation all four years.

Board members said everyone's uncomfortable with change and they believe this is better for the kids. Brian said they're changing too much at one time.

"They've already decided to close Wasson. Maybe that's enough change for right now. Maybe do that now, and if they want to change around these boundaries, maybe do it a few years down the road after this stuff is settled down," he said.

The maps are not concrete at this point just proposals.

The school board will vote on whether to approve the new district assignments Wednesday, February 27.
