COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A woman's car that she left running and unlocked with her children inside on Wednesday morning was stolen.

The incident hapened at about 7 a.m., in the parking lot of Walgreen's near Galley and Circle. Police said a woman left her two young children inside the running and unlocked vehicle.

When the woman returned to the vehicle about 10 minutes later police said a suspect got inside and started to drive away. Police said their opinion was that the suspect intended to steal the car but then realized there were two kids inside. The suspect then parked the vehicle and ran away.

Police said that one of the primary reasons for vehicle thefts is people leaving their vehicles running unattended. That often happens when people leave their cars warming up at home or while running into a convenience store.

Leaving a vehicle running unattended is both a violation of city and state law. The law states that no one is allowed to let a vehicle run its engine while unattended. The key must also be removed.

The woman who left the vehicle unattended with kids was summoned for Unattended Motor Vehicle, serve and release for child abuse (negelect). She was booked into jail on an unrelated warrant.
