COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- As Connecticut copes with the chilling loss of more than two dozen innocent people, the nation is in mourning, as parents try to address the emotional impact this deadly shooting has had on students.

"Kids begin to question, is it safe to go anywhere? Teenagers begin to ask the bigger questions, the deeper questions," Daniel Huerta, a licensed clinical social worker for Focus on the Family said.

Huerta, who has been a counselor for 12 years, said parents should not ignore this shooting.

The best thing to do is talk through the pain and explain that death is a part of life.

"Leaves you very thankful for what you do have. So talking to kids about the family having time, spending time with them but most importantly being patient and present with them in the moment," Huerta said.

As adults we can try to use some logic and make sense of what might have triggered this type of deadly action.

But kids will process this as emotion and with all the visible pain, it can get pretty scary.
