COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Firehouse Subs, founded by firefighters, is living up to its heritage.

As part of its Public Safety Foundation, it donated nearly $20,000 to Colorado Springs Battalion 3.

"We tell our own crew that the money you raise may use it to help save your

own life," Gary Gonzales, Area Representative for Firehouse Subs, said.

The funds are being utilized to outfit firefighters with special brush shirts.

"Those brush shirts are specifically designed for wildfires so that the embers brush off," Gonzales said "They’re lightweight yet flame-retardant."

More than 300 of those specially designed shirts were purchased ahead of what promised to be a busy fire season.

"More than anything, we need awareness from the community about the fire danger in Colorado," Ted Collas, Battalion Chief, said. "We have already seen this year how fires have broken out north of us."

Firehouse Subs plans to open a second location this Saturday at Austin Bluffs and Academy. That location will also raise money for first responders year-round.
