COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- When you pop open that tab on your soda, do you ever think that a little can could help fund your neighborhood hospital?.

Or build a house for a low-income family?

We know about the environmental importance of recycling cans, but doing so can also help the community in ways you may have never thought.

Veteran journalist Laura Powell was on the FOX21 Morning News to share ideas on how those cans can make a big difference.

For example, the San Luis Valley Habitat for Humanity funds its building projects from recycling aluminum cans.

In fact, they've been able to build about one house a year from money earned from their recycling efforts.

To find a recycling center near you, or ways to help your community through recycling, log on to www.earth911.com or www.aluminum.org.
