LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A Colorado-based company could be in the market for abandoned ethanol plants in Nebraska.
Gevo Inc. of Englewood would retrofit the plants to make an alternative fuel called biobutanol.
A number of ethanol plants in Nebraska have either gone dormant or been abandoned mid-construction as the ethanol industry has been buffeted by high corn prices, low wholesale ethanol prices and the U.S. credit crunch.
Gevo vice president and attorney Brett Lund says the company is actively looking at a number of ethanol plants across the country.
Lund says biobutanol, which can be made from corn and other grains, offers several advantages over ethanol. That includes a higher energy content and the ability to transport the fuel via underground pipelines that carry petroleum.
