PEETZ, Colo. (AP) -- The Holyoke-based Highline Electric Association has launched its first renewable energy project -- a system that uses heat from a natural-gas compressor to generate electricity.
The electric co-op expects to save about $10 million in power costs over the life of the 20-year contract with Ormat Technologies. The operation in Peetz in northeast Colorado will produce four megawatts of electricity at peak capacity.
The facilities owned and operated by Ormat will capture waste heat produced by the Kinder Morgan natural gas compressor along the Trailblazer natural gas pipeline.
The recovered heat is used to vaporize a fluid to drive a turbine/generator set that produces energy.
