COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The American Red Cross is honoring some "Hometown Heroes." They're people and organizations who exemplify courage, kindness, and unselfish character.

The Community Partner Hero Award is being given to the Chick-Fil-A at the Garden of the Gods location, for the work they do to honor other heroes.

Since 2005 Randy and Linda Watson, owners of that location, have held The Patriots' Festival & Ride for Heroes.

"It's just a way for us to honor our police, fire and military for everything that they do for us in the community," Randy Watson said.

The festival is a free event that offers many attractions such as a Flight for Life helicopter landing, bomb squad truck, and K-9 dog demonstrations. It also allows the community to thank those who serve face to face.

"You know sometimes I think that they're under appreciated. I see them come in here everyday and sometimes it's a thankless job, and we really wanted to take the opportunity and just thank them for what they do in our community," Watson said.

Each year the event has grown but last year following the Waldo Canyon Fire the festival felt extra special.

"This past year actually had much greater meaning with the Waldo Canyon Fire. I think it really gave an opportunity for the community to come together and again show appreciation for especially our firefighters," Watson said.

More than 4500 people attended the event.

"I was the volunteer coordinator for the event so I got to see firsthand how much this event meant to the community following the Waldo Canyon Fire and then I also got to see how much Randy and Linda poured their heart into this festival," Jessica Norsky, Marketing Director and Nominator, said.

"It's really not just about selling chicken. It really is about giving back to the community, because honestly we wouldn't be in business if it wasn't for our guests that come in every day," Watson said.

After working to honor others for years Watson said being honored takes some getting used to.

"It actually feels a little awkward that we're being honored when we're trying to honor the true heroes," he said.

"You will not find two more humble people than Randy and Linda Watson, and I think because of that what they do is absolutely inspiring and that's something that can be passed on to others," Norsky said.

During the fire the store was closed for three days but Watson said they brought in some of their staff to help feed the firefighters.

They also donated $13,000 to four charities: Home Front Cares, the Peace Officers' Memorial, The Colorado Springs Professional Firefighters Local 5, and the National EMS Memorial.

Hometown Heroes will get their awards March 21, at the Antler's Hilton.
