DENVER (AP) -- Civil unions for gay couples are likely to advance in the Colorado Legislature when the House votes on the bill in a committee.

The measure being considered on Thursday grants same-sex couples rights similar to marriage. House Republicans have defeated the bill the previous two years, but it's expected to become law this year because Democrats control the legislature, and Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to sign it.

About a dozen states already allow either civil unions or gay marriage.

The vote Thursday is expected to happen after hours of testimony. The bill will still need to be considered by the full House.
