COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- One hundred and fifty tons of sand and 50,000 sandbags are helping homeowners left vulnerable after the Waldo Canyon Fire prepare for flash flooding.

"Every rainstorm you just keep thinking to yourself could this be the flood they keep telling us about, is this the way it's going to be. So when we saw that they were doing free sandbag saturday and all these volunteers just helping us, it humbles you to see so many people care for you in that way," Barbara Reichert, a concerned homeowner said.

Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management and 2,000 volunteers passed out sandbags to help locals protect their homes.

Some volunteers going the extra mile by jumping in truck beds and offering to unload the 60-pound bags of sand.

The freebie coming with safety tips on how to prepare for a flash flooding event and a reminder that protecting life is still the number one priority.

"So were teaching everybody to go up not out, watch the weather channels, make sure you're getting the best information possible. Get a weather radio so you know what the dangers are," Ken Huglett, with the Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management said.

The office of emergency management bought every sandbag in the state of Colorado to make sure every concerned homeowner had a shot at protecting their home.

If you are interested in stocking up on sandbags, they are located in the West parking lot of the Verizon Building on 2424 Garden of the Gods Rd. on a first come first serve basis.
