Tours local business
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Senator John McCain returned to Colorado Springs Friday.
Touring local business Springs Fabrication, Senator John McCain continued to press his message on taxes and small businesses.
"They don't want anybody's taxes raised. They do not want capital gains taxes raised. They feel that what they need is lower taxes. And less government regulations of their businesses," said McCain.
"Certainly in Colorado Springs that sort of economic message plays well here given how conservative it is," said University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) political science professor Josh Dunn. He said McCain coming to Colorado Springs again makes sense, because McCain has to fire up the base.
"He has never had a very good relationship with social conservatives, especially the religious right, and obviously there are a lot of Christian conservatives here. He's got to make sure those people vote for him," said Dunn.
Polls show McCain behind in both the popular vote and the electoral college. Dunn says Obama can win the presidency without Colorado, but McCain probably can't. And right now he is trailing here by about five points.
One bit of good news for McCain--the polls have been all over the place.
"You see huge gaps in many of the nationwide polls between Obama and McCain. Then you see some that have been very reliable in the past show a very close race," said Dunn.
Still, he gives McCain a roughly 10 percent chance of winning. He says a month ago, he would have put it at 30 percent.
"You'd be crazy to put money on anyone other than Senator Obama at this point," he said.
