COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Protecting your property in a flash flood comes down to preparation, so here are a few tips on how to stay safe.

The Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management suggests homeowners evaluate their risks and determine where water can get into their house.

Use sandbags to direct water away from your property and from seeping inside your home by placing sandbags at window wells and the garage door.

"What's going to give you the best protection to get you out of the house or to higher areas in your house before water fills up," Ken Hughlett, Office of Emergency Mgmt. Coordinator said.

If you're located in a flash flood warning prepare to get to higher ground that includes: the second floor of a house or up on a hill.

The big thing to remember in a flash flood is to stay away from the roadways because you could be washed away in your car.

Always have a 72-hour emergency kit ready to go, that means food, water, important documents, and clothes because you never know when you're going to have to leave your house.

"If you have your 72-hour kit it's the same for a fire, tornado, or a flood if you have a 72-hr kit and get snowed into your house and nobody can come and take care of you for a couple of days you've got your 72 hours worth of food at your house," Hughlett said.

While there were no major flooding issues Wednesday homeowners need to be vigilant everytime it rains.
