BOULDER, COLO. (AP) -- Police say a University of Colorado student wore a clown hat and a mask depicting the Joker from the Batman series into a Boulder theater, causing several moviegoers to run from the building and call police.

Boulder police say the 17-year-old male told police he was aware of the July 20 shooting that took place during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at an Aurora theater. Twelve people were killed and 58 were wounded in the attack.

Aurora is about 35 miles southeast of Boulder.

Police say they found the mask in a shopping bag when they took the student into custody Sunday evening. The teen didn't have a weapon and didn't make threats.

Police say the teen said he wore the mask to scare his friends. He has been charged with five counts of misdemeanor menacing and was taken to juvenile detention facility.
