DENVER (AP) -- Same-sex couples are going to the Colorado Capitol to testify for a bill that would grant them similar rights to married couples.

The proposal is one of the most anticipated this session and likely to be among the most emotionally charged. Similar legislation failed last year in the Republican-controlled House after easily passing the Democratic-led Senate with bipartisan support.

The bill would grant same-sex couples rights similar to those of married couples, including the ability to be involved in their partner's medical decisions. It also would enhance inheritance and parental rights.

The proposal is expected to clear a Senate committee Tuesday.

About a dozen states allow either civil unions or same-sex marriage. The New Jersey Senate passed a gay marriage bill this week but a veto is expected.
