Nine-year-old girl killed in 'tragic accident'

RYE, COLO. -- Sad news out of Rye Sunday afternoon.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said a nine-year-old girl was hit and killed in a "tragic accident."

A spokesperson with the sheriff's office said the girl was gathering wood with her family when she was asked to retrieve the family dog and was hit.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been released.

El Paso County Sheriff Kirk Tayor released this statement Sunday night: "This is such a heartbreaking tragedy. I extend my most sincere sympathy to this family."

No arrests are expected, and officals said alcohol did not contribute to the accident.
