COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs will serve as a host community for the 2013 Ride the Rockies Bicycle Tour, officials announced on Monday.

This is the 28th year for the tour and about 2,000 riders are expected to join.

The tour is scheduled from June 8-15. It starts in Telluride and ends up in the Springs at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort.

It features rides through thee scenic mountain passes and a trek over the highest suspension bridge in the U.S.  Riders will travel more than 20,000 vertical feet over seven days and 513 miles.

“Colorado is becoming known worldwide as a premier cycling destination and Ride The Rockies is a big part of the reason,” said Nathan Christian, Wells Fargo’s regional president for Colorado. “This signature tour showcases our fabulous mountains, boosts our economy, and provides much-needed funding for local charities. On behalf of Wells Fargo, I’d like to thank the tour organizers and volunteers for all of your hard work to make this tour such a success, and send our best to the riders.”

According to event organizers, this is the third time Colorado Springs has been chosen as a host community.

During the 2012 tour, it was estimated that the riders spent an average of $250,000 in a 24-hour time period in each city,

Residents were disappointed as the 2013 Pro Cycling Challenge did not choose Colorado Springs as a destination.
