DENVER (AP) -- Colorado oil and natural gas regulators are nearing the end of a three-day hearing to consider proposed new rules.

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado and Greeley Mayor Tom Norton were among those addressing the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission on Tuesday as the panel considered a proposal to keep drilling at least 500 feet from homes.

On Monday, the commission approved rules making the state the first to require energy companies to do groundwater sampling both before and after they drill. The sampling is meant to show whether supplies of drinking water have been affected by energy development.

Industry officials and environmental groups have both expressed disappointment over the new sampling rules, with the sides disagreeing whether the rules are too weak or robust.
