Local businesses want to welcome you to their small corner of the world this Saturday. And every day after that.

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, a day to showcase what independent shops have to offer during the busiest shopping weekend of the year. It was started by American Express in 2010 to help small businesses gain exposure after the hype of Black Friday. It is estimated that 100 million consumers patronized local shops last year, which not only supports the store, but also the community.

Sam Eppley, owner of Sparrow Hawk in downtown Colorado Springs, says the whole region benefits when customers shop at local businesses. "Approximately 65% of money spent in local independent stores stays in Southern Colorado. And only about 15% stays in Southern Colorado when it's spent at a chain.”

Saturday is the Holiday Kick-Off in Colorado Springs, with several events downtown in addition to Small Business Saturday. The Colorado Springs Conservatory and other musicians will be caroling starting at 2:30, and the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR) will be decorating storefronts. Santa Claus will be strolling through Acacia Park taking requests, and tree lighting with the Conservatory and Parks Director Karen Palus will be at 5:30 in Acacia Park.
