COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers have solved a sexual assault case from 1997.
According to officers, 41-year-old Atlantis Michaelson, who was 25 at the time, sexually assaulted a woman at a local bar on March 29, 1997.
The woman was with friends when she got into an argument and stepped outside to get some fresh air. A man began talking to her outside, saying he saw the argument, and offered her a ride home.
The woman let him drive her home but wouldn't let him come into her apartment when he asked. He then became angry and overpowered her in his car, sexually assaulting her.
Fifteen years later, investigators identified Michaelson as the suspect. They resubmitted forensic evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which identified Michaelson using new technology that wasn't available in 1997.
Michaelson is currently serving prison time in Virginia but is scheduled to be released in December. Officers will arrest him when he gets out of prison.
