COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers said they shot a pit bull in the middle of the street to protect children at an elementary school.

According to officers, two "aggressive" pit bulls were running loose near Scott Elementary School on Balsam Street Thursday morning.

Officers instructed children to leave the area, then shot one of the dogs in the street.

The other was captured and taken to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Officers said they shot the dog to protect the children nearby.

Nobody was hurt, and officers said the dogs did not have owner tags.
