COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers said the man who died after crashing during a chase with them Wednesday actually shot himself while fleeing.
Officers were looking for 27-year-old Benjamin Corson, who was wanted for several robberies and was considered armed and dangerous. They spotted him near Byron Drive and Pikes Peak Avenue in southeastern Colorado Springs around 11:38 a.m., but he took off in a pickup truck before they could arrest him.
A minute later, Corson crashed on northbound Murray Boulevard. His truck went over a curb and airborne on top of a car before crashing through a fence near La Cresta Estates.
The coroner said Corson actually shot himself during the chase, which is how he died.
Officers said Corson was responsible for a pizza store robbery and two liquor store robberies in a four-day span from Sept. 14-17.
