COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Colorado Springs Police Department has ruled the death of a 10-month-old child a homicide. This is the first child homicide for 2012 and 18th homicide for the year.
The child's stepfather, Pfc. Zachary Doggett, was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder and Child Abuse Resulting in Death. He is being held at the El Paso County Jail.
Fort Carson has confirmed Doggett as an active duty soldier with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
CSPD was called to the 900 block of Brant Hollow Ct. Friday night for 10-month-old male that was unconscious but breathing. After being sent to Memorial Hospital, with bruises on his torso and face he was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he later died.
An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt force head trauma.
Police say the parents initial account of how the injuries occurred were inconsistent.
