COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs is the second worst city in the U.S. for cell phone service, according to a TIME Magazine report.

TIME, which released the list Monday as part of its series on how wireless technology is changing lives, took data from OpenSignalMaps to compile its list. OpenSignalMaps compares signal strength in given regions with the rest of the country as well as globally.

In Colorado Springs, the coverage is 19 percent worse than in the average U.S. city.

The mapping website also lists the best carriers based on signal strength and shows Sprint is #1 in Colorado Springs, followed by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T.

Verizon's #2 ranking comes despite a website's report that they have the fewest registered towers in the city.

CellReception.com, which shows a map of all FCC registered cell towers that aren't third party companies, shows there are nine AT&T cell towers, nine Sprint towers and seven T-Mobile towers in the city. OpenSignalMaps also shows towers but doesn't filter them by registration or third party access. According to them, T-Mobile has the most towers, followed by Verizon, Sprint and AT&T.

TIME attributes much of Colorado Springs' cell problems to rugged terrain. It also states a large group coming together, such as concerts at the World Arena or an Air Force football game, can also disrupt service.

Bakersfield, Calif. was the worst place for cell service on TIME's list. Oklahoma City, Lincoln, Neb., and Toledo, Ohio rounded out the top 5.
