FORT CARSON, COLO. -- Military officials said three troops killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan were assigned to units based at Fort Carson.

The Defense Department identified them Thursday as 38-year-old Air Force Maj. Walter D. Gray, of Conyers, Ga.; 35-year-old Army Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, of West Point, N.Y.; and 45-year-old Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, of Laramie, Wyo.

Authorities had said earlier that insurgents who detonated suicide vests Wednesday in Kunar province killed three coalition service members and a civilian.

Gray was an air liaison officer and flight commander for the Fort Carson-based 13th Air Support Operations Squadron, which is part of the 93d Air Ground Operations Wing headquartered in Georgia.

Kennedy and Griffin were assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Griffin was a 24-year Army veteran who was on his sixth deployment. He received 60 awards for service. Kennedy was a 12-year Army veteran with 26 awards.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this story.
