COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Construction cones, pavers and closed lanes, that's what Powers Boulevard looks like in the middle of the Powers paving project.

The $10.3 million operation includes deep asphalt repairs, guardrail installation and drainage improvements.

"What's happening is it's coming off the roadway, and it's washing off to the sides," Ken Medina, the project manager, said.

Thousands of cars travel along Powers everyday, and because it's one of the main north to south corridors in Colorado Springs, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has kept the street open.

So, while work is taking place CDOT is shifting traffic lane closures that help with the final construction product and provide a huge safety feature.

"They're on the wrong way of the road going southbound on a northbound road. We've had several cars do that," Medina said.

So many cars have had issues with the single and double lane changes Colorado State Troopers are on site every evening making sure careless drivers are held accountable.

Construction crews are expected to finish the project around mid-November but the lane closures are expected to end late September.
