ESTES PARK, COLO. (AP) -- A man who killed a black bear is denying claims that he planned to kill the animal.

A group of animal rights activists said Monday that Gary O'Dell posted a note on the Internet last week that he planned to have a bear barbecue. The bear was shot and killed last Wednesday by O'Dell, who is the property manager of the Elk Horn Lodge.

O'Dell tells KUSA-TV he had to shoot the bear because children were in danger.

O'Dell says he doesn't remember threatening in advance to shoot the bear.
