At least two judges departing after 2012 ratings dip
LOS ANGELES -- Fewer than 24 hours after Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler announced he was leaving American Idol, Jennifer Lopez has announced her departure from the show as well.
That leaves the once-dominant ratings juggernaut with just one judge, and rumors are swirling that Randy Jackson may also be leaving the judge's table to take on a mentoring role. If that's the case, Idol producers will be looking for three new judges.
Auditions have already begun for Season 12 of the reality singing competition, which took a big ratings dip in 2012 and fell off its perch as TV's number one show. Idol is the only show in television history to be the most watched series for seven consecutive years, doing so from 2005-2011.
The show began in 2002 with Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell as judges. Season 12 premieres in January 2013 on FOX21.
