PUEBLO, COLO. -- A 23-month-old girl died Tuesday after her uncle ran her over with a car, Pueblo Police officers said.
Around 3:45 p.m., officers said the toddler was lying down in the driveway of a home in the 2100 block of east 5th Street when Thomas Avila ran her over.
Avila quickly grabbed his niece and rushed her to the hospital. A witness told officers the toddler and two other girls were lying on bath towels in the driveway to dry off after swimming, which they do routinely. The two girls left the toddler to go inside to get another blanket, and that's when Avila ran her over.
Avila said it was an accident and said he also hit a car on the way to the hospital but did not stop.
Officers said they don't think alcohol or drugs were involved and haven't announced any charges yet.
