WOODLAND PARK, COLO. -- Residents who were evacuated from the city of Woodland Park are allowed to return home, according to Teller County Sheriff's deputies.
Areas in the eastern party of the city were evacuated when the Waldo Canyon Fire began spreading west after destroying homes in Colorado Springs Tuesday.
Crews said containment lines east of the city are holding.
Roughly 3,000 people will be able to get back in, but Highway 24 will not re-open yet. Any Woodland Park evacuees who are staying in El Paso County will have to wait for the highway to open or find an alternate route back to the city.
Areas along Highway 24 such as Cascade, Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park and Crystola are still closed, but deputies said it will reopen for residents. Highway 24 will reopen to the general public at 1 p.m., Sunday.
All other evacuated areas remain in place.
The fire is burning about 17,073 acres and is about 45 percent contained as of Sunday morning.
