COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs saw a high of 101 degrees Tuesday, which breaks an all-time record-high and marks the fifth straight day the city has seen record-breaking or record-tying temperatures.
The city got to 100 degrees both Saturday and Sunday, which tied for the hottest temperatures ever recorded. The Springs had hit 100 just four times in more than a century before that, but has never reached 101 before 3:09 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
The hot and dry conditions have made it very difficult to contain the Waldo Canyon Fire, which started Saturday in the foothills west of Colorado Springs and has grown to more than 5,100 acres.
Relief is in store for the remainder of the week, but only relative to what the city has seen so far. Temperatures will stay in the 90s with little rain in sight. The humidity is expected to rise slightly, which should bring moisture to the air and help firefighters.
