COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- One day after walking out of a Denver jail a free man, Douglas Bruce is speaking out about his conviction, starting with what he calls an unfair trial.
"I have a right to a trial where the crime allegedly occurred which is here, not with Denver liberal government people," Douglas Bruce, said.
The anti-tax crusader spent 103 days behind bars after being convicted of evading state taxes.
Prosecutors at one point said he hid millions of dollars in a "sham charity".
"They said they didn't like the charity but they don't have to, it was approved by the IRS," Bruce said.
Bruce claims he donated three years worth of his county commissioner salary, totaling near $130,000 to fulfill campaign promises.
He went as far as to show FOX21News a letter he said is from an IRS audit, that proves his innocence.
"The government wanted to punish me because I wrote the 'Taxpayer Bill of Rights', which limited the government's ability to take away our money," Bruce said.
And by promoting smaller government Bruce said he's become a political prisoner, which is meant to destroy his credibility.
