COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) customers could see a change in their rates and this time they could be getting lowered.
CSU said after reviewing costs they discovered they are able to lower rates and have submitted a proposal to do just that to city council.
If approved it would be the second time rates have gone down this year.
The last time was in February and rates were lowered about $1.35 a month for natural gas.
This time both natural gas and electricity rates would be going down, thanks to natural gas rates remaining low nationwide.
CSU said as a non-profit organization it is their job to pass the savings onto the customers.
"We return every cost savings to our customers dollar for dollar that we can," Dave Grossman, spokesperson for CSU, said.
Grossman said the average decrease for the typical residential customer would be around $1.50 a month for natural gas and 75 cents a month for electric.
That totals to around $2.25 a month or $30 a year.
"We look at our fuel cost revenues and expenses every month to determine whether we should raise or lower rates," Grossman said.
But before the savings can show up on your next monthly bill the decrease first has to be approved by city council.
They will vote on the proposal Tuesday but it is expected to pass.
"CIty council approved the rate decrease in January that actually ended up affecting customers bills in February, and we expect city council to approve the rate decreases on Tuesday as well," Grossman said.
If approve the rate decreases would go into effect June 1.
